Hung, Hsiu-Ch’uan

Hung, Hsiu-Ch’uan
(1813–64)
   Rebel.
As a young scholar in Canton, China, Hung was introduced to the beliefs of Christianity and began to teach a syncretistic faith combining Christian ideas with traditional Chinese doctrines. In 1851 he and his peasant followers rebelled against the rule of the Manchu emperors and dedicated themselves to setting up the ‘Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace’. Initially the insurrection was successful, but it was eventually put down by foreign troops led by Lieutenant Colonel C.G. Gordon. Hung himself commited suicide in 1864. The whole episode did little to recommend Christianity to the Chinese authorities.
